Job Description

As an RAF HR Specialist, you can expect to work up close to flying operations on RAF bases and at military locations in the UK and overseas. You will have opportunities to volunteer for positions in places like the USA, Cyprus and with NATO forces in Europe and will deploy overseas to use your skills on operations in Afghanistan, the Middle East and the Falkland Islands. You may find yourself delivering HR Services on RAF squadrons operating the latest aircraft such as Voyager, Chinook, Typhoon and F35 Lightning II or as a member of the HR and display support team with the Red Arrows. You will also have the opportunity to work at the most senior levels of the RAF, Defence and NATO in Headquarters in the UK and Europe.

Entry Requirements

  • Be aged 16 – 35 years old
  • Have GCSE at Grade C/4-5 
  • Be a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, holder of dual UK/other nationality or have been a Commonwealth Citizen since birth
  • Commit minimum 3 years post Phase Two Training
  • Meet the health and fitness criteria
  • Pass the Airman Selection Test
  • Pass a General Fitness Test

Your Future Career Prospect/Progression 

You will join the RAF initially for a period of twelve years on a Notice Engagement. After completing one year’s total service from the date you joined the RAF, you will be eligible for promotion to Senior Aircraftman/woman, providing that you have passed your Specialist Trade Training and the Trade Ability Test in your first Unit. As you gain knowledge and experience, you will be ready to apply your professional HR and broader military leadership and management skills to compete on merit with your peers for promotion. Progression to higher rank will bring greater responsibility for resources, manpower and leadership of your own team of HR Specialists. You will be encouraged and supported continually to challenge yourself by progressing to specialised roles such as HR Trainer providing training to the next generation of HR Specialists or as an RAF Career Manager where you will be responsible for advising on and managing the career progression of RAF personnel in other Trades.

National Government Policy states that all students should have achieved at least a Grade 4 or C Grade in English & Maths at GCSE.  Achieving this minimum grade in these subjects will increase the opportunities open to you, support your future career development and prospects.

Students who do not meet this standard will be supported to continue to study English and Maths through full-time education or an Apprenticeship.
