Hinkley Point C (HPC) will be the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK and one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. Sizewell C (SZC) will be the second of this generation to be built in the UK, following the construction of HPC.
Construction and all supporting activities will be carried out by a large and diverse supply chain overseen by a project team. The Supply Chain function within the HPC Project Team is responsible for the placement and management of all of the contracts required to construct and commission the plant. This includes pre-contract procurement activities; managing tendering processes; contract negotiations and subsequent post contract commercial management. As a Quantity Surveyor Degree Apprentice you’ll sit in the Supply Chain Team working on the HPC Project.
The HPC Quantity Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship will instil the skills to kickstart your career as a commercial professional with EDF Energy or one of our Supply Chain partners on the HPC project. You’ll spend five years learning from experts as part of the apprenticeship as well as studying for a university-level qualification. On the scheme you’ll follow the Chartered Surveyor Apprentice Standard.
During the apprenticeship you’ll also be working towards attaining membership of a professional body (RICS), which demonstrates to the HPC supply chain and peers that you work to the highest professional and ethical standards. With our support you’ll study fora Quantity Surveyor Degree at University of the West of England (UWE).
At the end of the apprenticeship you may move into a permanent role in the EDF Energy HPC Supply Chain team or within one of our Supply Chain partners. As your career develops there’ll be opportunities to progress within your home organisation for EDF Energy this could be in the HPC Supply Chain team or you could explore opportunities across the wider project portfolio or within other areas of EDF Energy. Supply Chain partner opportunities could be across the whole wider company portfolio.
This year we have opportunities available within EDF Energy working on the HPC Project or with two of our supply chain partners – Faithful+Gould and Balfour Beatty. During the assessment centre, we’ll give you more details on each of the opportunities available and work with you and the other organisations to identify the best opportunity.
EDF Energy is the majority shareholder in the HPC project and is the UK subsidiary of the EDF Group, one of the largest energy companies in Europe with interests worldwide, including the US and China. We are the UK’s leading generator and supplier of low carbon energy, producing around one-fifth of the nation’s electricity and employing more than 15,000 people. We operate nuclear, coal and gas power stations and wind farms. We have a focus on safe, dependable energy generation and an ethos of service excellence. We intend to play a leading role in new nuclear build in the UK and secure a bright future for the combined business and its employees.
The nuclear power stations we plan to build will be the first in a new generation. So a career in this area is a truly unique opportunity – an opportunity to be at the forefront of new nuclear, and to enjoy a long and fruitful career helping us deliver the first nuclear power stations in the UK for twenty years. The first station to be built will be Hinkley Point C, Somerset, sited next to Hinkley Point A and B stations. This will be followed by a new station at Sizewell in Suffolk, and another in Bradwell, Essex. These are amongst the biggest construction projects in Europe and they offer the chance to gain invaluable experience working with the latest reactor technology.
