You will be given the time to undertake a period of supported research, experimentation and studio time, to create a new portfolio of work and organise a public presentation to showcase - this could be an exhibition, a zine, an outdoor installation or whatever is most appropriate to share your new work with an audience. You will have your own studio space at Metal, and access to its full range of facilities and staff. You will be mentored by an assigned professional artist specialising in the visual arts, and work with the team at Metal to develop your wider skills in the field -, project management, budgeting, marketing, fundraising, and responding to commissioning briefs.
You will be responsible for creating the artworks, and organising the showcase. You will also work toward giving a talk about your work and hosting a discussion about its themes.
You will be part of the day to day life of the building, interacting with other visiting and residency artists; become part of Metal New Artists Network training programme; attend our hosted community dinners; and shadow our commissioned artists developing locally based community projects.
You will learn how to critically assess your work; how to write an artist statement, project proposal and funding application; how to create a budget; how to develop your online profile (website and social media); and how to produce a public event (whether an exhibition or publication launch). You will develop the confidence to talk about your ideas with other artists and the public. You will become part of a national network of creatives early in their career.
