Identify and build up cost estimates by analysing the materials and labour needed to complete projects. Liaising and communicating effectively with customers, suppliers and sub-contractors. Reviewing residential, industrial and commercial building plans in order to determine the electrical needs of a project. Reviewing supplier prices in order to determine how much each individual element costs and then negotiating to establish the best prices. Ability to analyse and assess multiple data points, including drawings, material costs and timelines to deliver an accurate estimate on time and within budget. High analytical and mathematical skills which requires an electrical estimator to ensure that his/her calculations are accurate and correct to keep jobs profitable. Determining the potential profitability of electrical projects to assist management in making sound bidding decisions. After determining material and labour costs (as well as overheads), electrical estimators prepare and submit project bids. These bids typically have guidelines established by construction companies. In each bid, electrical estimators try to balance their costs and potential profitability with ensuring that the bid can compete with other contractors and companies. Along with figuring out material needs and costs, electrical estimators determine the overall labour needs for a project. If estimators work with a single contractor, they figure out how long project elements will take to rough wire and finish for their crew. If estimators work with subcontractors, they may need to communicate to determine labour costs and gain a better sense of how much time the subcontractor expects a project to take.
