GCSE and A- Level students in England will now be given grades estimated by their teachers.

The government U-turn follows widespread concern after approximately 40% of A-level results were downgraded by the exams regulator (Ofqual) which was using a formula based on schools' previous results. Teachers' estimates will be used to award students grades - unless the computer algorithm gives a higher grade.

The decision brings England in line with the other UK nations.
