Inhabitants of the village of Scole on the Norfolk-Suffolk border are reporting increasingly frequent and mysterious noises - a horse at full gallop, starting as dusk falls and often on into the night, according to local reports.

Seemingly always heard in and around a former 17th century Inn in the village, no verified sightings of a rider or other rational explanations have yet been offered for the cryptic clattering.

'It's several horses, I think', offered one resident, P. O'Fire.  'It's like a horseman or horse being chased by a gang.  I'm pretty sure I've heard the yelling of the pursuers followed by a ghastly laugh, but my Mrs says I need to lay off the Sherry.  I know what I heard.  Whoever the horseman is, it's as if he rides right into the building and up the stairs!  I'm not venturing out until after Halloween now, that's for sure.'

One eccentrically dressed traveler interviewed by this reporter was not so convinced.  'A ghostly highwayman ye say?  I've not seem the like o' him and besides, a fella of such a profession would likely give that posse the slip, skilled and daring as he no doubt must be..' he croaked, gazing out along the road.  When we turned to ask if he knew more however, the figure and his tricorn hat had vanished, along with our wallets.
