GPS Survey Highway Operative Apprentice

This is an exciting opportunity for an apprentice to gain entry into the construction industry and develop a long term and varied career in highways with an employer.

Working days: Mon-Fri 40 hours, 5 x shifts, 7.30 am - 16.30pm or 8pm to 4am. Some sites could require longer travelling times and may involve periods away from home (weekdays only). This would be discussed further on starting.Total hours per week: 40.00.

18 months apprenticeship. 

Due to the nature of the work, and for insurance purposes, the apprentice will need to be 18 years old or over and must be able to drive to access all sites.


The apprentice must be prepared to work away from home and travel. You could be away from home for up to 5 days a week (weekdays only). You will be put up in a reputable hotel and receive allowances.

You will work outdoors in all weather conditions and the work can be physically demanding. You will be expected to wear protective clothing at all times, such as full reflective jacket & trousers, safety helmet and boots.

Main Duties will include:

  • Groundworking –digging shallow trenches for foundations and drains
  • Concreting – laying concrete for foundations
  • Road working – concreting, laying kerbs, paving and re-surfacing
    You will use various hand, power and machine tools and, with further experience and training, you could operate construction plant such as dumpers or excavators.

The role will require you to:

  • Carry out your work to the highest standards, adopting a ‘right first time’ approach
  • Adhere to Carnell safety policy and standards
  • Communicate well within your team
