The role of a firefighter is incredibly rewarding and it’s changing. Not only do you respond to fires and other emergencies, but you work on preventing them happening in the first place through education and safety messaging. Everyone at Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service prides themselves on putting our community first.
In the Spring of 2018, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service will be recruiting new Whole-Time Firefighters for the first time in several years.
We want to make sure we have the best people applying, and to help us find them we are holding a number of “Have a Go” taster sessions throughout the county. If you are 18 years of age or older and are reasonably fit and healthy, come along to one of our events and find out about a career in the Fire and Rescue Service.
Chief Fire Officer Mark Hardingham says: “These are a great opportunity for people from all walks of life to come and ‘have a go’ to see what you need to do to join our fire service. Irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, race, the fire service is a fantastic career for you – we want you to come and join us!”
We are very proud of the diversity that exists in our communities and we are committed to ensuring that our workforce represents that diversity. Currently more than 90% of our operational firefighters are white men. To be more reflective of local communities, and improve the service we provide, we are actively encouraging more women, more people from black and ethnic minority groups and more people from the LGBTQ+ community to apply.
As a firefighter you will spend a lot of time out in the community conducting home safety check in people’s homes, visiting businesses to improve their fire safety, and talking to people of all ages and from different backgrounds about fire prevention, road safety and other safety messages. You will also be involved in open days and other events, encouraging people to consider how they can make their homes and businesses safer. Come along to a taster day and see exactly how the modern day Firefighter does their job and show us that Suffolk’s men and women have the skills to wear the firefighter uniform with professionalism and pride.
Firefighters need to be reasonably fit and healthy with a combination of strength and stamina. Key skills we are looking for are resilience, confidence, good communication and a clear commitment to equality and diversity within our Service. At our taster days you will have the chance to learn about:
•The role of a firefighter
•The recruitment process and what comes next
•Fitness standards as well as the tests you will be taking
•An overview of our service and our purpose.
•Our Work and how we do it
•A fire service career path – from Firefighter to Chief Fire Officer
We know from previous years that Firefighter recruitment is very competitive and we expect a large turnout to these events, so please register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
