Health Physics Monitor – Level 2 Apprenticeship

Role Information
Radiological Protection Technician – Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship Standard Reference: ST0290 – Level 2.

Applicants must be aged 18 or over.

A Radiation Protection Technician provides radiological monitoring services at the work face within the nuclear industry to protect people, plant and the environment from the adverse effects of ionising radiation and contamination.

Radiation Protection Technicians use specialist instruments to carry out radiological protection monitoring for people, by taking readings of surface and airborne contamination levels and radiation dose rates, recording the readings detected and responding accordingly.

They also:

  • undertake radiological surveys, decontamination activities and prepare survey reports
  • Prepare work locations to ensure control of radiological hazards
  • Ensure staff abide by good radiological protection practices
  • Maintain compliance with radiological standards


  • Five GCSEs in the 9 to 3 (A* to D) range, or an appropriate Level 1 qualification with an overall Merit profile, ideally including maths and science.

Training Provider Information

  • Bridgewater and Taunton College – National College for Nuclear, Bridgewater
  • Length of training – 24 months
  • Training will be delivered via 3-week block release
  • Travel, accommodation and meal allowance included for block release if applicable

Working Information

Working hours: 37 hours per week - Monday to Thursday (07:25-17:00)


  • 1st Year - £12,500
  • 1st Year after 6 months - £14,000
  • 2nd Year - £16,836

Key things to consider:

  • Due to the remote location of the sites, public transport availability is limited. An interest free loan/advance of salary is available to assist with travel.
  • The role will involve working outside, at times at heights.
