The role of the horticultural apprentice is crucial to the success of the garden centre. You are our face on the frontline representing our brand and values. You will ensure our customers receive the very best customer service experience, exceeding their expectations at every opportunity.

The position will involve the use of associated grounds maintenance equipment and materials. Training will be provided throughout the apprenticeship, working towards accredited qualifications.

Key responsibilities:

Financial performance:

  • Drive sales in the garden centre by upselling at every opportunity and driving customer loyalty through endorsing privilege card sign ups
  • Reduces stock losses through following stock processes and procedures
  • Conducts regular checks on working areas, ensuring excellent retail standards are maintained and every line of stock is available on display

Customer service:

  • Achieves the highest level of courteous and informative customer service in a timely manner
  • Offers informed knowledge for the benefit of the customer that contributes to the reputation and performance of the garden centre
  • Demonstrates a willingness to gain knowledge and information that will enhance customer service levels
  • Demonstrates an excellent level of customer service, and maintains a professional level of appearance by adhering to company uniform standards
  • Demonstrate passion, inspiration, and expertise in every customer interaction

Health and safety compliance:

  • Responsible for working in a safe manner and ensuring the company’s health and safety procedures are followed
  • Ensure that own actions do not cause risk or hazard to yourself or others
  • Report any health and safety concerns in a timely manner to their mentor, manager, or duty manager

Operating standards and brand:

  • Ensure that all stock management procedures within your control are followed correctly to minimise stock loss
  • Be self-motivated to seek out information and share as part of a team
  • Ensure that company information is understood, communicated onwards, and acted upon as required
  • Willingness to offer ideas and support to benefit the garden centre and the company

The role of a horticultural apprentice, depending on your primary departmental responsibilities, may also include - when required - the following job roles:

  • Pricing standards - stock always priced when displayed in garden centre
  • Maintain garden centre displays - point of sale and merchandising standards
  • Ability to cross sell/up sell - introducing alternative products and privilege cards
  • Operate a till and handle cash
  • Plant care and housekeeping standards
  • Edging and shrub bed maintenance
  • Weeding/sweeping
  • Litter picking/leaf collection
  • Chemical application
  • Safely use grounds maintenance equipment including hand tools, strimmers, hedge-cutters, and any other machinery required
  • Carry out maintenance to grounds maintenance equipment
  • Compliance with all relevant legislation
  • Horticultural operations such as planting, pruning and maintenance of trees and shrubs
  • Work within the plant area - and complete plant watering duties
  • Warehouse duties involving manual handling
  • Product knowledge/product location/handle telephone enquiries
  • Efficient stock management - ensuring stock levels are correct
  • Flexible to work across all departments within the garden centre - transferable skills

Additional duties:

  • Undertake appropriate training and coaching relevant to role, demonstrating brand values of passion, inspiration, and expertise
  • Adheres to all company policies and procedures as outlined in the colleague handbook
  • Carry out duties which are required within the role as it evolves within the development of the company
  • Providing support to other garden centres as required for needs of the business
  • Any other such reasonable duties as directed by line management as appropriate to the level of appointment
