Employer Description

Northgate High School are based in Ipswich. We have approx 1700 students in year groups 7-11 and sixth form year groups 12-13.

There is an opportunity for a Lab Tech to join the team.

Main description

The purpose of this role is to provide effective technical support within the Science Faculty to meet the needs of the Chemistry Department and to assist with other areas within Science when needed.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure all apparatus, equipment, chemicals and materials are prepared in a timely fashion for demonstration or for pupils to use, as requested by teaching staff.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to teachers, and students, and assist in practical activities as appropriate.
  • Prepare solutions, chemicals and equipment to teachers’ requirements.
  • Where appropriate, ensure all labels referring to safety hazards are clearly visible and that all safety guards are fitted correctly.
  • Dispose of or reclaim all waste laboratory materials including chemicals, microbiological waste and animal waste in accordance with procedures, meeting Health and Safety requirements.
  • Wash and/or clear away equipment as necessary.
  • Put away apparatus, chemicals and equipment after classes and store in accordance with LA and statutory requirements, check for malfunction and arrange for repairs through established procedures.
  • Dismantle apparatus, equipment etc, and store away.
  • Put away part-completed work for students’ future use.
  • Ensure all items are in good working order and arrange repairs through the established procedures. Carry out maintenance and first line repairs to equipment and apparatus; report the need for further repairs or replacement to the Head of Department.
  • Assist with the arrangement of repairs and servicing of equipment through established procedures.
  • Maintain and keep records of apparatus, equipment, materials for inventory purposes.
  • Maintain stock levels of equipment and materials and re-order as necessary, through the established procedure including keeping stock records and carrying out stock checks.
  • Check deliveries and invoices and refer any queries to suppliers or administrative staff, as appropriate.
  • Assist with displays/visual aids work.
  • Ensure that all equipment, materials, apparatus, tools and machinery are kept in their designated places and that appropriate statutory Health and Safety and security measures are observed.
  • Where appropriate, ensure all labels referring to safety hazards are clearly visible and that all safety guards are fitted correctly.
  • Ensure that Health and Safety Regulations and relevant legislation are observed.
  • Recommend purchase of materials, stock, equipment/machinery spares and renewal of unserviceable items and ensuring cost effectiveness.
  • Decide which used materials can be re-used or reclaimed.
  • The safe disposal of materials including chemicals and cultures.
  • The majority of decisions expected of this post are taken within well established procedures, practices and routines. The postholder is expected to deal with variations from the accepted pattern, missing stock or equipment and, if appropriate, bring the matter to the attention of the Head of Department

Entry requirements

GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and Maths, or equivalent

Things to consider

The duties of this post could vary from time to time as a result of new legislation, changes in technology or policy changes. Where necessary, appropriate training will be given to enable the postholder to undertake new/varied work.

Future Prospects

There may be an opportunity for a full time role as a Biology or Chemistry Technician on completion of the apprenticeship.
