The hall Room Stewards are the face of Holkham Hall to the general public. They tell the story of the hall and are available to answer a wide range of questions on the estate as a whole. Holkham stewards have, year after year, been the benchmark of excellence in the world of stately homes. You will be joining a very strong team.
Stewards work on hall open days (Sunday, Monday and Thursdays), as well as extra days for Easter and for Halloween. You will be paid by the session from 11.45am to 4.30pm. You will be given a 20-minute ‘snack and comfort’ break during your shift. You will be expected to commit to those sessions for the season. Holidays by arrangement. There may be some scope for those wishing to work fewer days, by arrangement.
There may also be the opportunity to work as tour leaders on Holkham’s Candlelight Tours for Christmas. All stewards are of equal seniority and report to the Hall Manager or his deputy. Stewards are also responsible for raising the alarm if anything untoward should happen while the hall is open, but there is always someone on hand to call if any issue relating to security, accidents or other problems arise.
Visitors to the hall are self-guided and can go at their own pace. Some 13 room stewards are positioned in rooms throughout the hall, where they will spend the day greeting visitors as they go around. Stewards usually then move on to another room for their next shift and will cover all the rooms in the hall over time.
Stewards need to be outgoing and willing to engage the general public but also need to be sensitive to those visitors who would rather be left to their own devices. Stewards wear their own (smart) clothes. Stewards have a strong interest in history but also in story-telling. Stewards bring the story of the hall to life. You do not need to have an existing knowledge of the hall as full training will be given. An interest in stately homes, in general, would be an advantage. You will start by shadowing an experienced steward. You will be given a short synopsis of the hall to get you going and extensive and detailed notes to which you will always be able to refer. Your colleagues will be more than happy to help you out with tricky questions. (There will be tricky questions!)
After gaining experience as a Room Steward, you may have an opportunity to train for Private Guided Tours, where you will take groups of up to 25 visitors from start to finish and reveal the whole story. These tours take place when the hall is not open to the public.
