Main purpose of the role

Innogy Ltd is offering the opportunity for motivated young people to begin a career in renewable energy working within a highly skilled diverse team. This excellent apprentice scheme will enable the selected candidates to develop into technicians working on wind turbines.

We will provide a comprehensive and well supported learning programme including classroom based learning and experience on site working with our technicians.  Completing the Apprenticeship will result in a Level 3 Diploma in Engineering.

Our Wind Technicians are working as part of a small team and are dedicated to specific offshore wind farms. You will learn to carry out scheduled, unscheduled and proactive maintenance on wind turbines, including fault finding, repairs and trouble shooting. 

Your hard work will ensure our wind farms continue to deliver power to households and businesses.  It’s a rewarding job that allows you to work outside with your hands on highly advanced machinery. Once trained you will be working at sea, in all weathers and at heights of up to 100m, using heavy, complex electrical equipment. You will demonstrate a commitment to Health and Safety in all aspects of your work.

Initially the focus will be upon learning and developing engineering knowledge through education and training. 

However in the longer term as Technicians the role will involve:

  • Electro/Mechanical problem solving of wind turbines working in pairs at heights up to 100m in remote locations with user manuals as reference point to trace issues
  • Work at height, using heavy equipment and electricity in a safe manner
  • The technicians will be required to plan in advance what tools, spares, manpower and personal planning is required for each job they do.
  • Fault finding and diagnosis of wind turbine components and determining if site repair is possible or whether unit requires exchange

Candidate requirements 

You will be keen to learn and undertake a practical role, with some standby required. Over a four year period you will be attending Lowestoft College 2 days a week based on a 37hr Week, backed up with site based learning & development

Knowledge and Skills:

  • 5 GCSE’s at C or above ideally including Science and Maths
  • Willing to learn and develop
  • Interest in engineering
  • Able to work at height
  • Able to work at sea
  • Willing to work shifts
