The first trial to assess the effectiveness of underwater surveying technology on aging structures on the River Avon has taken place.
Jackson's CDT team appointed specialists Storm Geomatics to carry out a comprehensive survey of Environment Agency-owned assets at Nafford Sluice and Weir in Worcestershire.
These assets are coming to the end of their design life, so they need updating and refurbishment. Underwater bathymetric surveys have been conducted from a boat, using sonar echo sounders to investigate whether there has been any undercutting and scouring at the base of the sluice piers. Surveys of the surrounding riverbeds and embankments, as well as terrestrial laser scanning and manual topographic surveys of the structure above water have also been used to build a full picture of the area.
The resulting data modelling will be used to inform designs for any work that is undertaken. The trials are being subsidised through the EA’s Net Zero Carbon Innovation Pathway Fund, which supports pilots of innovative solutions in the delivery and management of our infrastructure assets, to help achieve NZC ambitions. It is hoped the trial will highlight a number of benefits, including reducing the need for divers working in confined space and water, and lower the carbon footprint of a project due to less staff. The data could also be used to help future works such as, decommissioning, modelling, asset displacement referencing.
