Job Description

Training officers plans, develop and deliver training to new and existing staff. This could be to ensure competency in certain roles or to provide additional development, for safety critical tasks or for compliance in areas that are heavily regulated or legislated.

Trainers often use their own training, experience and knowledge to design effective workshops and presentations which they deliver to staff in their organisation or to third parties. (-if they are working for a training organisation themselves.)  They will use a combination of face to face delivery, printed materials and e-learning to provide training in the most appropriate form for their audience, project and budgetary or logistical considerations.

Entry Requirements

You can get into this job through:

Apprenticeship

You may train by doing an advanced apprenticeship as a learning and development practitioner.

You'll usually need 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship.

University

It can be useful to do a foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree in:

  • business studies
  • human resources management
  • communications

You'll usually need:

  • 1 or 2 A levels, or equivalent, for a foundation degree or higher national diploma
  • 2 to 3 A levels, or equivalent, for a degree

Work

You could start as an assistant in a human resources or training department and work your way up.

Direct Application

You can apply directly to employers or set up your own training company. Experience in training or teaching will be helpful.

Other Routes

You can take professional qualifications in learning and development to get into this job, either online or at a training centre approved by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Career Path and Progression

With experience, you could become a senior training officer or training manager.

You could also become a freelance trainer or consultant.
