About us

Breheny was established in 1963, since then we have grown to provide civil engineering services to almost two thirds of the country with offices in Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Kent, Lincolnshire, Buckinghamshire and Yorkshire.

Our diverse expertise covers many forms of civil engineering including highways and bridges, infrastructure and groundwork, river and marine, energy and utilities, waste management and surveys for clients including local authorities, commercial land owners, developers and national agencies.

Breheny is one of the largest family owned civil engineering companies in the UK and with internal resources comprised of over 400 employees and our own plant fleet consisting of over 3000 items of plant and equipment, we are able to bring a highly experienced team to every project that are committed to delivering efficient, cost effective and innovative solutions.


With exciting plans for growth and expansion already being realised, we are looking for people with the ambition to further their career and help continue to drive the company forward. We offer a range of apprenticeships, which combine theoretical learning and practical workplace experience.
Examples of apprenticeships we offer:

Apprentice Site Operative

You will gain experience working on sites that encompass all of our different work types. You will be mentored by some of our most experienced and knowledgeable workforce, who will provide you with the practical skills essential for your development in Civil Engineering.

In addition, you will attend college, through either day or block release, where your knowledge and skills will be further developed.

Apprentice Plant Operator

You will receive practical training on a variety of Civil Engineering plant items. This will be backed up by training at college on block release, which will result in achieving NVQ level certification.

Apprentice Civil Engineering Technician

This apprenticeship gives you a broad, but thorough understanding of Civil Engineering.

Over a period of 3 years, through a combination of on-site experience and block release college training, you will develop the basic skills required to become a site setting out engineer and potential site supervisor.

NCE Talent Champion 2018

We are delighted to have been awarded NCE 100 Talent Champion Company 2018. This award recognises Breheny’s commitment to training and developing our own staff through apprenticeships, technical training, mentoring and ICE Training scheme.

To win this award we had to present to a panel of NCE 100 judges why we develop our own staff, how we do it and what are the benefits to the individual and Company.

It’s great to be recognised by fellow Engineers for the work we do in such a nationally recognised awards such as the NCE 100.

Suffolk Business of the year

Breheny Civil Engineering won the East Anglian Daily Times (EADT) ‘Suffolk Business of the Year 2018’, at the awards ceremony we also were first in the ‘Showcasing Excellence’ category.

John Breheny, Chairman said after the award “I am thrilled that BCE have won two awards at the EADT Business Awards – for Showcasing Excellence and Best Overall Business. It is a fantastic tribute to the hard work and dedication of all employees. Well done to all.”
