About Us

Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service is an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice (MOJ).  HMPPS works with its partners to carry out the sentences given by the courts, either in custody or the community.  It aims to reduce reoffending by rehabilitating the people in its care through education and employment. The agency is made up of Her Majesty’s Prison Service, the National Probation Service and a headquarters focused on creating tools and learning.

Career Areas

Operational Support
An operational support grade (OSG or prison support) is a key player on site working to keep the prisons safe and running smoothly.
If you join the team, you’ll be at the heart of a busy prison and will often be one of the first faces the public and people working in criminal justice see when they visit a prison. On a shift pattern, that includes some night work, you’ll support the day-to-day running of our prisons, working to keep our establishments safe and secure around the clock.

  • £20,000 - £25,000 per year depending on location
  • Fully funded apprenticeship opportunities 

Day to day responsibilities:

  • Welcome family members, visitors and lawyers
  • Monitor offender mail and phone calls
  • Check CCTV
  • Patrol perimeters
  • Carry out security checks and searches
  • Report contraband items
  • Occasional prison vehicle driving in some establishments.

Prison Officer
Our prison officers perform a vital role in society in an environment like no other. Change your career to one that changes lives.
Working in a prison is fast-paced and varied. You will be trained for all kinds of situations, from keeping the prison safe to helping offenders to learn new skills.

Why become a Prison Officer?

With training, teamwork and the support you need to succeed.

You will start on a 37 hour contract until your initial training is complete. After this you can choose to increase your hours to 39 or 41 hours a week.

You can also earn more if overtime is available in your prison.

Starting salary between £22,000 - £30,000 per year.

Catering Team

Working as part of the catering team in the prison service will offer you flexibility, a good salary and pension and Civil Service benefits. Join a professional environment where you have the opportunity to mentor and oversee the work of offenders, helping them to learn new skills.

It is a great chance to put your catering skills into practice, working with the team to prepare meals for the entire prison. The quality of food has a real impact on prison morale and you will use your skills to create quality, nutritional meals every day. By managing offenders who are keen to learn a skill, you will have an impact far beyond the kitchen by helping them earn a qualification for future employment.

As part of the Civil Service Pension Scheme, you will receive up to 20% of your salary when you retire.     

Annual leave:

You will receive 25 days paid annual leave, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service.
