General Electric are investing USD 400 million in the next 3-5 years to develop and deploy the Haliade-X 12 MW wind turbine - the world's largest offshore wind turbine.

According to GE, the 12MW direct drive generator (capacity factor of 63%) machine will produce 45% more energy than other currently available offshore turbines.  At 260 meters high (from sea level) the units will be more than five times the size Paris' Arc de Triomphe and carry 220-meter rotors.  The 107-meter-long blades will be longer than a football pitch - the longest offshore blades to date.

Their first demonstration nacelle will be shown this year, whilst they aim to ship the first Haliade-X units in 2021.

GE Renewable Energy is holding a series of UK supply chain engagement events for the machine including locations in East Anglia - subject to interest.

Specifically they are interested in learning more about local capabilities in:

  • Castings/Forgings – Hub, frames, shafts, flanges
  • Bearings – main bearings, pitch bearings
  • Motors and drives – pitch drives, yaw drives
  • Structures – Stator, supports
  • Active parts - magnets/coils
  • Fabrication - floors, platforms
  • Cooling systems – ducting

Company visits are planned as well as a few business business gatherings – likley in King’s Lynn, Norwich, Gt Yarmouth and Lowestoft.  Their Lead for Supply Chain Localisation is in the region on 28-30 May.

Companies that feel they may have the necessary capacity and technical capability that GE will be looking for should contact Henry Mules at Hethel Innovation. The requirements listed above are not exhaustive - Organisations with other capabilities that GE may be interested in should get in touch.

All interested parties should send a short summary and a contact, as well as availability on the dates mentioned.
