Norfolk Environmental Action Team July 2025

Firstly many thanks to all our existing volunteers for sticking with us through the heatwave, I’m afraid it isn’t getting any better (I HATE it when the weather forecasters say how great the sunny weather is!) so please do encourage anyone joining us to make sure they have plenty to drink, work at their own pace, and take to the shade when necessary.  We will try to make sure we always have plenty of water and cups available to top them up as required.  And maybe the occasional ice lolly…

So, onto July, and some exciting developments this month.  Farewell and the best of luck with their next steps to some of our Easton College students, but on the other hand we expect to be welcoming some residents from the Brook Hotel, who will be a very valuable addition to our crew.  Some of them will have been through trauma, and may not speak English as a first language, but I’m sure everyone will make them feel most welcome.

Also, over the next few weeks we will be trialling a new portable toilet for use on some of those sites where there is no loo apart from the bushes!  I am hoping as many participants as possible will get the chance to, er, try it out, and will let me know (in not too much detail!) whether it is useful and useable.  It comes with a mini-tent for privacy!  If it does work, we are hopeful that this will enable many more people to join us without worrying about needing to ‘go’.

As for the tasks this month, balsam pulling (the chance to see beautiful hidden riversides) and bracken pulling (the chance to see precious heathlands in flower) starts to merge into cutting and raking of our rare meadowlands.  With only 5% of Britain’s lowland flower-rich grassland remaining, lets do our best to look after the remainder.  There’s also paths to create and enhance at sites all around the edges of Norwich.

I hope some people you work with will be able to join us this month.  Remember we are very flexible, people can just try a day with us whenever suits them.
