The role of a Customs Officer is to help prevent illegal or dangerous goods being imported into the country such as firearms, drugs, alcohol, tobacco and endangered species. They will search baggage and individuals for smuggled items and make arrests if necessary.
The minimum academic requirement for entry into the profession is two GCSEs or the equivalent. Graduates with an honours degree in any subject (2.2 or higher) can apply through the fast track graduate recruitment scheme, details of which are available from the HM Revenue & Customs website.
The ability to listen and ask questions, able to keep calm under pressure, assertive but tactful, excellent communication skills, confident in decision making.
