ABOUT DUDGEON

The Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm is located between 32-50km off the coast of the seaside  town of Cromer in North Norfolk.  Since its completion in late 2017, this 402MW offshore wind farm has been producing enough green, clean energy to power more than  410,000 UK homes from its 67 6MW wind turbine generators. The wind farm is located in water which is between 18-25m deep on a 55km² site, and the electricity which it generates is brought to shore via a seabed cable at Weybourne Hope on the North Norfolk coast. From there an underground cable carries this electricity to Necton in the Breckland district of Norfolk, where a purpose-built substation enables the electricity to be transmitted into the National Grid.

Through the joint venture company Dudgeon Offshore Wind Limited, the wind farm is owned by Equinor, Masdar and China Resources (Holdings), and Equinor is the operator having developed this power plant between 2012 and 2017.

The Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm is currently the furthest operational wind farm away from the UK’s shoreline, and its development and operations have involved Equinor’s New Energy Solutions business implementing innovative technologies and devising new working methodology. One such example is the use of the ESVAGT Njord service offshore vessel (SOV) to access the wind turbine generators and the offshore substation.

DUDGEON TEAM

The port town of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk is home to the Operations and Maintenance base for the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm. The Dudgeon team moved into the purposed designed building on the river harbour quayside in July 2016, and it is from here that all operational and maintenance activities are planned and co-ordinated. The building also includes a large warehouse facility for storing spare parts and for receiving goods and equipment associated with the support of the vessels used to access the wind farm. The sophisticated control room is the heart of the O&M base, and it is from here that all logistics for both the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm and Hywind Scotland, which comprises 5 floating wind turbines off the coast of Peterhead in Scotland, are managed.

The base is now home to around 70 permanent employees including engineers, control room operatives, marine co-ordinators, planners and support staff. It is from here that the turbine technicians board the vessels that take them to the wind farm site. The marine coordination team monitors the movement of vessels and personnel offshore, and is in constant communication with the vessels in the field.

This team of people is responsible for the safe, efficient and cost effective production of the electricity generated by the offshore wind turbine generators, and its successful transmission to the UK National Grid. You can hear from some of them below:
