The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust carries out nearly one million outpatient appointments, day case procedures and inpatient admissions annually. The population we serve is predominantly the people of Norfolk and north Suffolk, although some patients are referred from further afield.
Every year our staff of more than 7,000 provide acute hospital care to more than 822,500 people from Norfolk, from neighbouring counties and from further afield. Our patients are referred to us by around 100 local GP practices but also from other acute hospitals around the country.
We provide a full range of acute clinical services, including more specialist services such as oncology and radiotherapy, neonatology, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, rheumatology, paediatric medicine and surgery. We also work closely with the University of East Anglia’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences to train health professionals and undertake clinical research.
We have world class facilities, highly skilled staff and are rated highly by our patients for our quality of care. We were authorised as an NHS Foundation Trust on May 1 2008.
We currently have approximately 675 volunteers and work with a wide variety of external voluntary groups to support the Trust and enhance the experience of our patients.
Volunteers have been specially trained to support appropriate patients at mealtimes, to provide therapeutic massage and dementia support volunteers have been introduced to OPM wards, and in addition to this some specialist roles have also been established such as Reading Aloud, Reminiscence, Breast Feeding Support and Music Therapy. We are committed to providing work experience placements for students to assist them in developing an understanding of working life in a health care setting. Work Experience Non-Clinical Programme
This is aimed at Year 10 students. The Trust offers 3 individual weeks during the year for the NNUH work experience.
Each week is a structured, planned programme consisting of visits to departments, presentations, talks, tours, and some skill based learning. The programme covers careers such as physiotherapy, radiography, pharmacy, health records library, nursing, medical, midwifery and sterile services.
Nursing & Midwifery Observation Programme
This is aimed at Year 12 students who are not sure if they would like to pursue a career in either nursing or midwifery.
Please note this placement is observation only and will include shadowing staff on wards and other areas.
The programme is for 3 days only and will be run 3 times a year.

An apprenticeship is a job which has a very structured education framework to support the role. It provides on-the-job training so that you gain work experience that will enhance your future employment prospects along with achieving a nationally recognised qualification. You will also earn whilst you learn!
Existing staff members in bands 1-4 who have lived in the UK for a minimum of 3 years and do not hold a degree or level 4 or above qualification are eligible for funding to undertake an apprenticeship framework providing the selected programme is achievable within the employee’s job role.
The Apprenticeships are delivered by a College or Training Provider, mainly if not completely within the workplace. Apprenticeship frameworks have replaced NVQ’s as stand alone qualifications and are a combination of qualifications, which include Literacy, Numeracy, ICT, Technical Certificates, Personal Development and a NVQ Diploma portfolio, all of which need to be completed and passed to obtain the qualification.
Many departments within the NNUH are recruiting Apprentices of all ages. Newly Appointed Apprentices are new members of staff recruited by the Trust under a 12 or 18 month fixed term contract, depending on whether they are undertaking a level 2 or level 3 apprenticeship framework which will coincide with their job role. They receive the National Apprenticeship wage of £3.30 an hour (£ 123.75 per week).
Apprentice posts are proving very successful within the NNUH and are also a great stepping stone for a future career within the NHS and Healthcare Sector.
