Job Description

A Graphic Designer uses sketching, colouring or computerising using sophisticated software and CAD (Computer Aided Design) to help visualise, improve and refine design ideas. The graphic designer may also help to develop a brand by creating labels that customers will recognise, as well as creating pictures and marketing materials to display in shops that will try to persuade customers to buy their products.

Entry Requirements

There are no set requirements. You'll usually need a foundation degree, HND or degree in graphic design or other visual art subject.

You'll need a portfolio of work to demonstrate your creativity.

Some relevant work experience, especially on a live project, will help when looking for a job.

You could get into this career through an apprenticeship.

Career Path and Progression

You could become a senior designer, creative director or move into management.

You could go freelance or start your own design agency.

The Chartered Society of Designers (CSD) and the International Society of Typographical Designers (ISTD) have resources to help you progress your career.

Another option is to move into teaching or lecturing.

National Government Policy states that all students should have achieved at least a Grade 4 or C Grade in English & Maths at GCSE.  Achieving this minimum grade in these subjects will increase the opportunities open to you, support your future career development and prospects.

Students who do not meet this standard will be supported to continue to study English and Maths through full-time education or an Apprenticeship.
