East Suffolk Council

East Suffolk House, Station Road, Melton, Woodbridge, IP12 1RT

About us

East Suffolk Council was created in April 2019 following a decade-long partnership between the former Suffolk Coastal and Waveney District Councils.

The Council made history by becoming the first brand new ‘super’ district council and is the largest district council in the country, serving a quarter of a million people.

Our head offices are located in Melton, near Woodbridge, and Lowestoft. We also have offices at the Port of Felixstowe, the UK’s biggest and busiest container port.

What we do

We are responsible for the following services:

  • Community Development –
We work with communities to support local needs, address anti-social behaviour and manage the countryside and open spaces
  • Economic Development and Regeneration –
We support local businesses and help create new jobs by working to secure inward investment, provide skills development, key sector support and physical regeneration and support projects which address transport issues and infrastructure
  • Elections –
We organise and run all elections in East Suffolk and make sure that everyone eligible is able to vote through electoral registration
  • Environmental Services –
We provide environmental protection, including dealing with energy, pollution and nuisance, inspect food and drink businesses and check that food imported via the Port of Felixstowe meets health and safety standards
  • Housing –
We manage and maintain our housing stock, work to improve private and social housing standards, maintain the housing needs register and prevent homelessness
  • Licensing –
We manage a range of licensing that helps control the sale and supply of alcohol, regulated entertainment, late night refreshment, gambling, taxi and private hire services, small lotteries, charitable collections and much more
  • Planning and Coastal Management –
We deal with planning applications, provide building control, design and conservation services and manage our beautiful coastline
  • Revenues and Benefits –
We administer and pay housing benefits and collect Council Tax and business rates

These services are supported by our other teams, including Human Resources, Finance, Legal, ICT, Policy and Property Services.

Responsibility for other services is shared with our partners, including The Arts, parks and gardens, leisure, cleansing, waste and car parks.
