About us

On 1 April 2019, East Suffolk Council became a brand new super district council for east Suffolk, replacing Suffolk Coastal and Waveney District Councils to deliver vital services for local communities.

The main offices for East Suffolk Council are located in Melton, near Woodbridge and Lowestoft. We also have offices at the Port of Felixstowe

As a district council, we work with local partners (including charities, businesses and other public services providers like the police and the NHS) and residents to determine and deliver local priorities. We provide a wide range of services, either directly or by commissioning services from outside organisations. We largely work within the powers laid down under Acts of Parliament and also have the responsibility for the economic, social and environmental ’wellbeing’ of the area.

Services and Responsibilities

East Suffolk Council is responsible for the following services:

  • Environmental Services is made up of two teams. Environmental Protection – this team deals with incidents of pollution and nuisance that arise within the district. Food and Safety – this team deals with registration and inspection of establishments in the district. There is also a big team based at the Port of Felixstowe.
  • Housing –the maintenance and management of council housing, improving housing standards, operation of the housing register and allocations and homelessness prevention.
  • Planning and Coastal Management – development management, building control, design and conservation, coastal management.
  • Economic Development and Regeneration – working on inward investment, business support, skills development, key sector support and physical regeneration. The team also provides support to projects to address transport issues and enhance district infrastructure.
  • Revenue and Benefits – the administration and payment of housing benefits, billing and collection of council tax for both domestic and business properties.
  • Community Development – community engagement, the management of anti social behaviour and countryside and open space management.
  • Elections – organising and running all elections as well as dealing with the electoral register.
  • Licensing - manages a broad range of licensing that controls the sale and supply of alcohol, regulated entertainment, late night refreshment, gambling, taxi and private hire services, small lotteries, charitable collections and much more.

Responsibility for some services is shared with our partners, including:

  • The Arts
  • Parks and Gardens
  • Leisure
  • Cleansing
  • Waste
  • Car Parks

Employment and Apprenticeships

East Suffolk Council employs over 700 people across the services listed above and other support services such as Human Resources, Legal, Finance and ICT. These employees can range from Apprentices through Support Assistants, Officers, Managers, Directors and the Chief Executive.

Salaries within the District Council are aligned to the Local Government Service Pay Scales and range from around £7524 for apprentices right up to Directors at £80k + and usually start at the base level suggested for the grade of job you apply for.

Apprenticeships, Graduates and Internship opportunities are often available and balance working with qualifications. You can find out  more about these opportunities here.

The District Council together with the other District and Borough Councils and with the County Council are committed to offering support and opportunities for young people and all come together under the banner of ‘Rising High’.

Apprentice Jade Read

"Since being employed by East Suffolk Council, it has been better than I ever imagined. I absolutely love working here. I truly look forward to coming into work everyday, and that is due to my team members, the job role that I am in and the organisation.

It can be really hard to decide what you want to do with your life after coming out of education, but deciding to do an apprenticeship is the best decision I’ve made! I have gained so much knowledge and skills since starting, it really is invaluable.

I feel so lucky to work for the Council and I can’t wait to see what the next year brings!"

Apprentice Max Cockrell

“This has easily been the most important thing I have done for developing my career and I would recommend the Apprenticeship route to anyone in the future as it can offer so many experiences and tasks that can boost your CV and personal performance.

My Apprenticeship has helped me understand the difference between college and a working professional environment. I have challenged myself and proved I am willing to learn new skills and techniques to help develop my professional career and try progress through the Council.

As a result of my Apprenticeship, I have been able to secure a full time position inside the Council working in the Licensing Team”
