About Design and Planning

The designing and planning aspect of the construction industry covers a wide area from architecture to town planning, interior design, sustainable environmental design and much more.

Designers and planners help to create or interpret designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments, this could be designing new buildings, renovating existing buildings, making decisions regarding the management and development of towns, cities, villages and the countryside or designing internal spaces.

The future of the construction industry is digital, building information modelling (BIM) is the future of design and long term facility management; it allows everyone involved in a project to understand the building through the use of a digital model enabling errors and clashes to be resolved in the early stages. The digital model will hold all of the information needed to design, construct and maintain the building in the future.

Whichever job role interests you in this sector you will need to have loads of imagination and creativity but once full trained you will have a rewarding and interesting career.

Specialisation in architectural concepts and design whilst definitely a part of this job area, is heavily creative - you can find more about that under Architecture which sits within Creative Industries.
