Job Description

Racecourse Ground staff will ensure the racecourse is in top condition, they will be required to work in all weather conditions to maintain the fences, track and rails around the course. They may also have to maintain spectator areas and buildings.

Entry Requirements

You can get into this job through:

Apprenticeship

You could get an apprenticeship at a racecourse. 

It will help you to get in if you have 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship.

Work

You may be able to find work as an assistant grounds person without qualifications. You could then work your way up by getting experience and studying on the job.

Other routes

You could take qualifications with an industry body like the Institute of Groundsmanship or Careers in Racing. They offer a Level 1 Racecourse: Turf Maintenance.

With experience, you could progress to supervisor, team leader or head of section.
