Job Description

A powerful engine, heavy armour, and massive firepower: that’s the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank. As a Tank Crewman you’ll drive and operate this amazing vehicle as part of a four-strong team. You’ll get to work in different roles including driver, gunner and loader. Eventually you can even qualify to command your own tank. But first, you’ll get first-class training that will teach you to look after your tank.

Entry Requirements

Age: 16 years - 35 years 6 months

Qualifications:No formal qualifications needed

Fitness: Mid Thigh Pull 76kg, Medicine Ball Throw 3.1m and 2km run 10m 15s.

Training for the role

Step 1
You'll start with your initial military training which will teach you how to be a soldier - this will cover everything from fieldcraft to how to handle a rifle. If you join as a Junior Soldier (under 17 years 5 months), you’ll do a 40-week military training course at Harrogate. If you join as a Regular Soldier (over 17 years 1 month), you’ll do the regular 14-week adult basic training. 

Step 2
Next, you’ll head to Bovington, Dorset for 20 weeks of specialist training, to develop your technical skills. You will complete your driving licence (if you don't already have it) and then move on to your tracked vehicle licence (the H licence) before getting to grips with driving the 62 tonne Challenger 2. You will also learn how to maintain and fix the Challenger 2 as well as use the radios.

  • Car licence (Cat B)
  • HGV licence (Cat C)
  • Level 2 Technical Certificate in Engineering (Intermediate)
  • Level 3 Technical Diploma in Engineering (Advanced)

Although this job role does not require formal qualifications, we highly recommend that you try to achieve at least a grade 4 (C) in English & Maths. Achieving this minimum grade in these subject will increase opportunities in the future and help with your career development and prospects.

If you don't achieve the minimum grades, you will be supported to continue to study English and Maths throughout your full-time education or an apprenticeship.
