Thatcher's use traditional crafts and skills to maintain and replace thatched roofs on houses and other buildings.

Entry Requirements

There are no set entry requirements.

Experience in related jobs like roofing or reed cutting may be useful. Employers may ask for some GCSEs or equivalent, but your enthusiasm and your practical skills will be as important as qualifications.

You’ll need a good level of fitness and an enthusiasm for traditional building crafts.

You could contact individual thatchers or thatching companies to see if they've a vacancy for a trainee thatcher or thatcher's labourer.

National Government Policy states that all students should have achieved at least a Grade 4 or C Grade in English & Maths at GCSE.  Achieving this minimum grade in these subjects will increase the opportunities open to you, support your future career development and prospects.

Students who do not meet this standard will be supported to continue to study English and Maths through full-time education or an Apprenticeship.
