What We’re About
Established in 1872, Adnams is best-known as a brewer of beer.
Whilst beer and pubs remain at the heart of our business, we also make our own hand-crafted spirits, import wines for our Adnams Stores and run an online store.
At Adnams, we want to make sure that our impact on society is a positive one.
Our company values are rooted in making great products without costing the earth. From working with local farmers and producers who supply our brewery and hotels, through to partnering with a local business to install an anaerobic digestion plant to turn brewery and food waste into biogas, we believe that doing the right thing makes great business sense.
Sole Bay Brewery
Did you know that beer has been brewed on the same site in Southwold for over 670 years? Things have changed hugely since 1345!
Find out more about our history on our website.
Behind the walls of our Victorian-looking brewery, we’ve got some of the most advanced and energy-efficient brewing equipment in Europe. We’re proud of our long history of brewing, and we are constantly experimenting with new, innovative techniques. We’ve developed a network of great friends all over the brewing world, and we’re keen to share our knowledge and learn from others too. Find out more on our website
Copper House Distillery
Adnams is the first brewery / distillery (a bristillery?!) in England that’s able to produce high quality spirits directly from malted grains all the way through to the finished product. We use the same local ingredients to make our spirits – barley, rye, wheat and oats – as we do for our beers.
We use the best modern distilling techniques and a small batch process in order to create spirits with exceptional purity, quality and, of course, flavour. They key here is our ability to control every aspect of our spirits production – we even grown our own rye from fields just a few miles from the distillery.
Adnams Community Trust
The Adnams Community Trust was founded in 1990 to celebrate Adnams centenary as a public company.
It is funded by a percentage of Adnams annual profits, mandated dividends, donations and legacies.
The Adnams Community Trust awards grants to worthy causes within 25 miles of Southwold or, in the case of national charities, exclusively for the benefit of those living within 25 miles of Southwold.
Grants normally range from £100 to £2,500 and the Trustees expect to see the results of their donations within one year.
Most grants are made under the general headings of:
- Health and Social Welfare
- The Arts
- Buildings/Community Facilities
- The Environment/Conservation
Grants are never made to individuals, but may be channeled through recognised organisations that are prepared to sponsor needy individuals and to ensure that the money is well spent. Grants are made for specific purposes only, and are rarely made to the same organisation two years in succession.
For the full Adnams Community Trust application guidelines please contact Rebecca Abrahall Adnams Charity Administrator. You can download a leaflet about the Adnams Community Trust here. This leaflet contains contact details, information on the catchment area, and how to donate to the Adnams Charity.
