We’ve learnt a lot in the past 150 years and we’re very proud of our heritage. But we’re always learning. We’re proud to be at the heart of our communities and we plan to be here for many more years to come!

Commitment to helping young people

We are listed as a New Anglia Youth Pledge Marque holder. We made a commitment across Norfolk and Suffolk to help ensure young people have access to support and opportunities to enter employment, training and education.

Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to build confidence, learn new skills and obtain qualifications, all whilst earning a wage. Apprenticeships are work-based, paid training programmes providing skills development and sometimes a nationally recognised qualification. They combine practical training with study, both on and off-the-job.

Our aim is to use Apprenticeships to meet the business needs of our Society and our Apprenticeships across food, funerals, stonemasonry and Head Office, have already seen great success. By attracting, developing and maintaining talented people, we’ll have a highly skilled, productive workforce for the future, to continue the great work we are doing today.

We currently run 7 different types of Apprenticeships and sometimes advertise these roles externally. To find out more please visit our website;

Our Apprentices are not paid the Apprentice Minimum Wage – we feel that it is fair to pay them our very competitive rates for their role they are in.

Apprentices that have completed their qualification have gone on to utilise the skills and knowledge that they have amassed and some of them are now working on higher level Apprenticeships. Our first Apprentice “Graduation” event was held in November 2017, when we celebrated their achievements. Our level 3 Management Apprentices recently completed their qualifications, with a 90% achievement rate, well in excess of the national average.

Our Apprentice Team Manager Programme was launched in 2016. Colleagues who are working for us as Customer Service Assistants undertake the Level 3 Retail Team Leader Apprenticeship. Many have been promoted into permanent Team Manager roles.

Here is what 2 of them had to say:

“A year ago I walked in for a Customer Service Assistant interview. Since then I’ve joined the Apprenticeship programme and now I’m a Team Manager. It’s not only helped me in my career, it’s also helped me develop myself, especially in confidence.”
Aaron Bailey – Team Manager

“Without the apprenticeship I wouldn't have had this opportunity to learn and grow as a person. I've learnt a lot of skills and knowledge and put them to good use. I would always highly recommend the apprenticeship scheme to anyone, as I feel it’s a fantastic opportunity for education and growth within the Co-op.  Becoming a Team Manager has given me a lot of confidence and put a smile on my face knowing I'm very qualified in the position I'm doing at Frinton.”
Tom Starling, Team Manager and former Apprentice

Our Apprenticeships provide an opportunity for our more experienced colleagues to become a Mentor, to provide essential support an Apprentice and in the process to develop their own skills.  Mentors have the opportunity to attend off the job workshops on mentoring and coaching, therefore developing themselves as a result.
