The New Wolsey Theatre is a regional theatre with a national reputation for the quality, range and reach of its work and for embracing cultural diversity in the widest sense. The theatre is central to the creative life of Suffolk and seeks to expand the horizons of audiences and artists by presenting a programme designed to entertain, enrich and challenge. The watchwords for all work are highest quality, greatest diversity and maximum accessibility.
The New Wolsey produces and presents a year-round programme of work for all ages in both the main theatre (400 seats) and the studio (104 seats), combining its own productions with a wide range of visiting theatre, music, comedy, and other performing arts.
Job Roles within the Theatre
The range of jobs within the theatre industry is varied and vast, from Technicians to Front of House Assistants and Marketing Officers to Creative Learning Practitioners, there are many different positions which need to be filled to keep the theatre running. We employ full-time, part-time and casual staff in most departments, as well as freelance creative teams for our in-house productions.
The New Wolsey Theatre currently offers a rolling programme of apprenticeship and internship opportunities for young people looking to pursue a career in the creative and cultural sector.
We employ three apprentices a year, one in each of the core departments of the theatre, the job titles of which are as follows:
- Administration Apprentice
- Technical Apprentice
- Stage Management Apprentice
These apprenticeships are based entirely within the theatre and, upon completion of a 12-month period, will result in a Level Two qualification.
If you are interested in applying for work experience here you are advised to contact us as early as you can and state in your covering letter any particular interests or aspects of the theatre of which you would like to gain a better understanding. If we are able to offer you a place then you can expect to spend your time here getting a taste of the many different roles that make up the organisation. Alternatively we can tailor your experience by focusing on roles according to your interests and aspirations.
If you are interested in work experience in the first instance please email us for further information.
We also offer an Agent for Change work experience scheme for deaf and disabled young people interested in working in a theatre. This experience can be tailored to focus on your key areas of interest, or can provide a broad overview of every role within the theatre.
Production Arts Course
The New Wolsey Theatre is delighted to be working in partnership with Suffolk New College to be able to deliver a UAL Diploma in Theatre Production.
This unique collaboration between the theatre and Suffolk New College is a response to the impending skills shortage that has been identified by the National Skills Academy. We are one of the few sites in the country that provides such a course (the nearest being in either Thurrock or Lincoln).
The course has been running since September 2012 and gives students the unique opportunity to gather invaluable experience of working in the professional environment of a real, working theatre.
