Job Description

Art therapists help people express difficult thoughts and feelings through creative activities.

Entry Requirements

You can get into this job through:

  • An apprenticeship - You'll need: a degree in a relevant subject for a degree apprenticeship
  • A university course - You'll usually need a degree in a relevant subject for postgraduate study

Career Path and Progression

With experience, you could become self-employed and build up your own practice. 

You could also become a senior arts therapist and manage a team of therapists, manage an arts therapy unit, or move into teaching.

National Government Policy states that all students should have achieved at least a Grade 4 or C Grade in English & Maths at GCSE.  Achieving this minimum grade in these subjects will increase the opportunities open to you, support your future career development and prospects.

Students who do not meet this standard will be supported to continue to study English and Maths through full-time education or an Apprenticeship.

Required Skills

You'll need:

  • knowledge of psychology
  • customer service skills
  • patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • sensitivity and understanding
  • the ability to accept criticism and work well under pressure
  • to be flexible and open to change
  • the ability to understand people’s reactions
  • to be able to carry out basic tasks on a computer or hand-held device

Starting Salary

£30,401 to £43,772
