As a Civil Service Administrator you could be working in a number of different departments and cover a broad range of duties and responsibilities this could be in the department for transport, work and pensions, education, health or HM Treasury to name but a few. There are a number of different grades from an assistant to higher executive officer. Duties could include research, compiling records, working with the public and working on policy documents.
You’ll need to meet certain nationality rules to apply. You’ll usually need to be:
- a UK national
- an EU or European Economic Area (EEA) national
- another national with a right to live and work in the UK
You could work in a range of government departments or agencies. Each department sets its own entry requirements. You may also need:
- 2 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) for an administrative assistant role
- 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) for an administrative officer post

With experience, you’ll deal with complex enquiries or complaints, or take on more specialist work related to your department.

National Government Policy states that all students should have achieved at least a Grade 4 or C Grade in English & Maths at GCSE. Achieving this minimum grade in these subjects will increase the opportunities open to you, support your future career development and prospects.
Students who do not meet this standard will be supported to continue to study English and Maths through full-time education or an Apprenticeship.
