Job Description

Digital marketers promote brands, products and services through social media, websites and apps.

Entry Requirements

You can get into this job through:

  • a University course - You'll usually need 2 to 3 A levels to do a degree or higher national diploma

You could do a higher national diploma or degree in:

- marketing
- management
- business studies
- public relations

  • A college course - You may need: 2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 3 (A* to D) for a level 2 course. 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) for a level 3 course

You could complete a college qualification to help you get your first job. Qualifications include:

- Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Marketing
- Level 3 Diploma in Digital Marketing

  • An apprenticeship

You'll need: 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship.

4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) and college qualifications like A levels for a higher or a degree apprenticeship

  • Working towards this role
  • Specialist courses run by private training organisations

Career Path and Progression

With experience, you could specialise in a particular type of digital marketing like mobile or video marketing. 

You could progress to senior digital marketing officer or head of online marketing. You could also become a freelance digital marketing consultant, or move into a related area like advertising, sales or public relations.

National Government Policy states that all students should have achieved at least a Grade 4 or C Grade in English & Maths at GCSE.  Achieving this minimum grade in these subjects will increase the opportunities open to you, support your future career development and prospects.

Students who do not meet this standard will be supported to continue to study English and Maths through full-time education or an Apprenticeship.
