Web and App developers are responsible for designing, building and maintaining websites, website applications or mobile apps. They are heavily involved in coding and other technical aspects of these platforms and maybe also be involved with graphics. They can also be involved with the maintenance, additions and updates of existing sites and applications.

Web developers will use programming languages or source code to create software to meet their clients requirements for websites and possibly mobile applications.  You might specialise in either website or mobile application development or work across a broad range of Internet based technologies.

Entry Requirements

You can get into this job through:

College

You could do a college course that may help you to get a trainee developer's job.

The following colleges may offer a relevant course Computing:

Or your local sixth form may offer a relevant A level.

Apprenticeship

You could take a software developer higher apprenticeship, or a higher apprenticeship for IT, software and web professionals.

You could also do a digital and technology solutions degree apprenticeship.

You'll usually need 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) and A levels, or equivalent, for a higher or degree apprenticeship.

University

You could do a foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree in:

  • web design and development
  • computer science
  • digital media development
  • software engineering

You'll usually need:

  • 1 or 2 A levels, or equivalent, for a foundation degree or higher national diploma
  • 2 to 3 A levels, or equivalent, for a degree

Work

You may be able to start as a junior developer and improve your skills and knowledge by completing further training and qualifications while you work.
