Overview

The Hairdressing and Beauty Treatment industry provides treatments such as hair cutting, colouring, waxing, nails, make up services, skincare, body and spa treatments and much, much more. It is an ever expanding industry with more services and skills being taught and offered year upon year.

Over the past five years, industry operators have focused on lowering their prices to make their services more affordable, operators want their services to be regarded as necessities rather than indulgent and discretionary purchases creating more demand for serviced and thus creating more jobs.

There are just over 40,000 hairdressing, barbering and beauty businesses in the UK. Personal grooming businesses (barbering and beauty) are the fastest growing independent retailers with the industry generating almost £7bn in turnover each year.

Up to 270,000 people work in the hairdressing, barbering and beauty industry, over half are aged 16 to 34, with females aged 25 to 34 making up the largest group (28%).
