Job Description

A customer service adviser deals directly with customers either face to face, on the phone or by email listening to their enquiries and dealing with them quickly and efficiently as possible. They will help promote the company and inform customers about the services and products that they offer and may have to also deal with customer complaints.

You can start by doing a course like Business and Customer Service Level 3.

The following local colleges offer courses in Customer Service:

You usually will need 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, for a level 3 course.

Or your local 6th form may offer a relevant course.


You can do an intermediate or advanced apprenticeship in customer service.

You'll usually need:

  • some GCSEs, usually including English and maths, or equivalent, for an intermediate apprenticeship
  • 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship

Direct application

You can apply for jobs if you have customer service experience, for example from working in a shop, hotel or contact centre.

Employers may expect you to have some GCSEs, or equivalent qualifications, but also good communication skills and a friendly personality.

Career Path and Progression

With experience, you could progress to team leader or customer services manager.

You could also move into sales or account handling.
