Job Description

Nuclear Engineers design the equipment and create the operating procedures used in nuclear power plants. They will also research and develop ways that we can benefit from using nuclear energy such as in medical treatments, agriculture, energy and other industries.

Entry Requirements

You’ll need an HNC, HND, foundation degree or degree in a relevant scientific or technical subject, like:

  • chemical engineering
  • electrical engineering
  • maths
  • mechanical engineering
  • physics

You could also go on a graduate training scheme.

For some jobs in the nuclear industry you may need to pass security checks.

Career Path and Progression

You could move into research, or university teaching. You could also work freelance.

National Government Policy states that all students should have achieved at least a Grade 4 or C Grade in English & Maths at GCSE.  Achieving this minimum grade in these subjects will increase the opportunities open to you, support your future career development and prospects.

Students who do not meet this standard will be supported to continue to study English and Maths through full-time education or an Apprenticeship.

Starting Salary

£24,000 to £70,000
