Job Description

A Stage Manager is responsible for making live stage performances run smoothly, especially sets, equipment and props.  They organise aspects of rehearsals and shows and make sure that all the staff and performers are in the right place at the right time.

They will be involved in every stage of theatre performance, from rehearsals through to the final show and will work with everyone from the director, actors, technicians, prop designers, costume fitters and front of house staff.

Entry Requirements

You will normally need a degree or diploma to become a stage manager but it is possible to get into the role without a degree but starting at a junior level.

University

Relevant degree courses include:

  • drama/theatre studies
  • music
  • performing arts
  • stage management
  • theatre production/professional practice.

You will usually need:

  • 2 or 3 A levels or equivalent a degree course 
  • 1 or 2 A levels or equivalent for an HND
Work based route

You could start at a junior level such as stage crew member and work your way up.

You would  normally also require stage work experience - as a stagehand for example. Relevant experience can be obtained from student, amateur or community theatre, or by working / volunteering as a casual stagehand in a local theatre.

Salary Range

£18,000 to £45,000
