Steeplejacks carry out repairs, maintenance and renovation work to high buildings such as Church steeples, high rise buildings, bridges, industrial chimneys and other types of towers. They are also involved in fitting lightning conductors and aircraft warning lights on tall buildings.
Lightning Conductor Engineers operate in similar conditions and share many similarities with this role.
There are no formal qualifications required for a career as a steeplejack but some employers will require a good standard of general education. Some experience in general construction work would be an advantage or you may be able to apply for an apprenticeship.
You need to be physically fit for this role.
You will need:
- a good head for heights
- a good sense of balance
- a good level of fitness
- an awareness of health and safety procedures
- good practical skills.
