About the NHS

The NHS was launched in 1948 with a view to providing the residents of the UK with a good healthcare service regardless of their financial circumstances.

With the exception of some charges for prescriptions and optical and dental services the NHS remains free for anyone who is a UK resident.

With over 350 different career options within the NHS, there is almost something to suit everybody. You could work directly with patients, out in the community, in an ambulance trust or in hospitals, this could be in a clinical or non-clinical role.

You can enter the NHS whatever your background, previous work experience and qualifications and there is plenty of potential for progression once you are in, which will allow you to develop and fulfill your potential.

Follow the various career pathway links to find out what steps you need to take to start your NHS career!
