A Tax Adviser uses their knowledge of tax legislation to advise private clients and organisations. They will implement tax strategies to ensure that clients pay their taxes in the most efficient way, are paying the correct amount of tax that they benefit from any tax advantages or exemptions that they are legitimately entitled to.

Entry Requirements

You can get into this job through:

Apprenticeship

You can get into this job through a higher apprenticeship as a taxation technician or accountancy taxation professional.

You'll usually need 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) and A levels, or equivalent, for a higher or degree apprenticeship.

Work

You could start as an assistant in an accounting department and apply for a position as a trainee adviser with a company. You'll usually need 2 to 3 A levels.

Direct Application

You can apply directly to employers if you've got some of the relevant skills and knowledge needed for this job. For example, you could transfer from another profession like accountancy or law.

You'll need to apply for membership of the Association of Taxation Technicians, or work towards the Chartered Tax Adviser qualification offered by the Chartered Institute of Taxation.

Other Routes

You could apply for a graduate trainee scheme offered by many of the larger financial companies and banks.

You'll usually need a good pass at degree level as this option is very competitive. Subjects like accountancy or maths may be useful, although not essential.

You can also complete a professional qualification through the Association of Taxation Technicians or the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
