About Animal Welfare

Animal care can be hugely rewarding covering a large expanse of careers from zoo keeping, pet grooming and cattery management to farming, veterinary medicine, equine dentistry, guide dog training and much more.

Newmarket, Suffolk is often referred to as the headquarters of British horseracing and is home to the largest cluster of training yards in the country including the British Racing School.

East Anglia also provides great training for those looking to start their career with animals with courses at Easton College,  Suffolk Rural (formerly Otley College), East Coast College,  College of West Anglia and West Suffolk College.

To have a successful career in this sector you will obviously need a love of animals and have a very caring and sympathetic nature. You will also need to be dedicated and prepared to work long unsociable hours, after all animals need feeding and looking after at weekends, in the evenings and on bank holidays as well as during the normal working week. However job satisfaction is high and can make all of the hard work worthwhile.

A good way to start out in the animal care sector is by volunteering, this will provide you with valuable experience which you can include on your CV and will give you a good insight into the sector.

There are many different job roles with animals to consider, you will need to determine which ones are best suited to you and what qualifications you will require.
