Job Description

Bar Managers will keep their bar running smoothly, they will be responsible for managing and handling staff rotas to ensure that they have the right amount of staff at busy times, they will ensure that the stock levels are maintained  and will generally handle the day-to-day operations.  Other responsibilities will include recruiting new staff, training, keeping up to date with licensing legislation, ensuing beer and wine are kept in good condition, enforcing health and safety rules and dealing with difficult customers.

The hours are likely to be unsociable, long and irregular including weekends.

Entry Requirements

You can get this job through:

College

You could do a college course like Food and Beverage Service Level 2 or Hospitality and Events Management Extended Diploma Level 3.

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) including English and/or maths.

Or your local 6th form may offer a relevant course.

Apprenticeship

You could take a higher apprenticeship in Hospitality Management if you've got supervisory experience in restaurant work.

If you have not been a supervisor, you could do a hospitality supervisor advanced apprenticeship and continue with further training on the job.

You'll usually need:

  • 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship
  • 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) and A levels, or equivalent, for a higher or degree apprenticeship

Career Tips

The best bar managers have an outgoing personality and are hands on.  Experience will be important, if you've worked your way up from bar tender and have good customer service skills you will be a great candidate for the role.
